Day 20 | What Actually Lasts

Read:

What are you living for? You probably want the answer to be God, and family, and the things that matter most. Of course, you believe that's true. But Jesus is handing you a kind of litmus test: to find out what you’re living for, watch where your money goes.

Jesus understands the human heart. He knows how easily money starts to have power over us, pulling our focus off what's eternal and onto what's temporary. But God is a good Father, and like any good father, he wants to see you free from the grip of money.

God showed us how this works. Jesus left all the riches of heaven behind, came to us in human flesh, and paid the full price for our sin on the cross. His love for you outweighed his desire to hold on to what was rightfully his. He gave up everything so you could belong to him.

Which means the treasure of his heart is you.

God doesn't want you to be ruled by the false god of money; he wants your heart captured by him. He doesn't want you to hoard money for yourself, but to store it in the right place, with the right heart so it can be mobilized for his purposes. That's the kind of treasure that actually lasts.

Pray: God, it's incredibly humbling to realize that I am the treasure of your heart. Keep that truth right in front of me so that when I give, it shows that you are the treasure of my heart too. I want to invest in things that matter—things that will still be here in eternity. Amen.
