Beginning a conversation about following Jesus

Your child may be asking a lot of questions about Jesus; questions that you may struggle with or just aren’t sure how to answer. That’s okay, because this is a starting point for you and your child to discover faith.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

If you have never trusted Jesus as your Savior, now is a perfect time. Now is your opportunity to put your stake in the ground, as your child does the same.

The Bible tells us that we don’t automatically have a relationship with Jesus or go to heaven by:

  • Being good or doing acts of service
  • Going to church
  • Giving
  • Getting baptized as a baby

This guide will help you lead your child to take the simple step to follow Jesus and understand how sin separates us from God. It’s as easy as A-B-C.

A = ADMIT THAT WE HAVE SINNED
  • Everyone sins. When we sin, we fall short of God’s perfect standard.
  • Ask your child: What is sin, and how is it different from making a mistake?
‘For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.’ Romans 3:23
B = BELIEVE THAT JESUS DIED FOR OUR SINS
  • We need someone to rescue us from our sins. Jesus suffered and died to pay for our sins long ago, and he is living and offering forgiveness through his death today. Jesus saves us from our sins when we believe he died on the cross.
  • Ask your child: What has Jesus done for you? What is he doing for you now?
‘But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.’ Romans 5:8
C = CHOOSE TO ACCEPT THE GIFT OF FORGIVENESS
  • We get gifts from people who care about us. The gift of forgiveness is given to us from Jesus. Accepting that gift shows Jesus that we want to be in a relationship with him. We call this relationship a Forever Friendship. When we are Forever Friends with Jesus he helps us in our everyday life. The gift of forgiveness is a gift that can never be lost and it includes getting to live with Jesus forever in Heaven.
  • Ask your child: What does it feel like to receive a gift?
‘If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.’ Romans 10:9

Prayer

You can use this prayer with your child as you lead them to trust Jesus. They can read it, pray with you, or repeat small parts of what you say.

“Dear Jesus, I admit that I’ve messed up and sinned. I believe you died for my sins. I choose to accept your gift of forgiveness and want to trust you and be your Forever Friend. Amen."
